History and future
Today, tomorrow, and every day for the students.
At Thames British School, located in Madrid, we are proud of our journey and the foundation we have built in providing an exceptional British international education. Since our establishment in 2015, we have focused on delivering the highest standards of learning while, through a holistic approach to education, nurturing personal development, creativity, and resilience in every student. Our students are prepared to face the challenges of the 21st century, equipped with critical thinking skills, confidence, and internationally recognised qualifications, including Cambridge International AS/A Levels and the IB Diploma, that open doors to the world’s leading universities.
Our story
We empower each student’s talent.
From our beginnings in 2015, Thames British School has grown into a vibrant international community of ambitious, highly-qualified teachers and learners. Our classrooms are modern, spacious, and designed to foster collaboration, curiosity, and cultural awareness.
Our teaching staff is a balanced mix of native and fluent English speakers from around the world, all highly experienced, with postgraduate qualifications and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Many bring teaching experience from the UK or other British international schools, ensuring our students benefit from a rich fusion of global perspectives.
Education at Thames goes beyond academics. Our educators inspire students to discover their talents, pursue their passions, and develop resilience. Classes are taught entirely in English, following the National Curriculum for England, and the IB Diploma, ensuring continuity and comprehensive education at every stage, while supporting full language immersion.
Our approach
We spark curiosity and creativity.
We focus on individual growth, tailoring learning to match each student’s interests and abilities. Our holistic approach encourages academic excellence, personal development, and social responsibility. Students learn to think critically, embrace challenges, and explore their creativity, while developing confidence, perseverance, and respect for others.
At Thames British School, we pride ourselves on being a school where every student is truly known and supported. In almost all year groups, there is only one class per year, with a relatively small average number of students. This structure is one of the great advantages of not being a very large school, it allows us to provide personalised attention and ensure that every child’s strengths and needs are recognised.
Up to Year 4, all classes benefit from having both a class teacher and a teaching assistant, creating a nurturing environment where children receive even more guidance and support during these crucial early years.
Fun and exploration are central to our ethos. By combining rigorous academic standards with engaging learning experiences, we create a space where students can explore their individual enthusiasms, grow as learners, and achieve their goals.
Looking forward
As we continue to grow, Thames British School is committed to preparing learners not only for academic success, but also for life beyond school. Our vision is to nurture independent, confident, and compassionate global citizens ready to make a positive impact in the world.
Parents and the wider community are an integral part of our journey. Through events, meetings, and collaborative initiatives, we create a supportive, open, and committed environment that enriches the educational experience for every student.
Our international community, multicultural environment, and ethos of openness ensure that Thames British School remains a place of opportunity, growth, and inspiration for all who learn, teach, and visit here.
At Thames British School, we understand that many of our students join us from abroad and may not yet speak Spanish. To support their integration, we offer a dedicated Spanish Induction Programme, designed to help non-Spanish speakers build confidence and develop their language skills from the very beginning.
Through small-group lessons and tailored support, students learn practical Spanish for everyday life, alongside the academic vocabulary they need to succeed in the classroom. This personalised approach ensures that new learners feel included, can participate fully in school life, and gradually transition into the mainstream Spanish curriculum at their own pace.
The programme not only accelerates language acquisition but also helps students feel at home in Spain , opening doors to friendships, cultural experiences, and a deeper connection with their new environment.
